Climate change has scientists predicting more strong hurricanes, supercharged by a hotter ocean and warmer air, with storm surge made taller by sea level rise.
They project twice as many Category 4 and 5 hurricanes in the next 50 years, and $30 billion more hurricane damage every single year.
However scientists aren’t predicting more total hurricanes, it’s complicated and there could actually less hurricanes, just stronger and more damaging hurricanes.
How Heavy Rain Events Have Already Increased
Already there’s been 40% more heavy rain storms last 60 years. Warmer air can hold more water, so a warmer America has more downpours. Scientists predict heavy rain storms to increase another 100% next 30 years, as America warms another 2 F.
